牛鬼伝説 - Cow ogre( Oni ) legend

A monster named a cow ogre lived in this temple higher than 400 years ago now and hurt man and beast.


People are troubled very much. The people asked 山田蔵人高清(Takakiyo - Yamada kuroudo) to defeat a cow ogre. he was a master hand of a bow with the samurai who was the strongest in this neighborhood.

Takakiyo had a bow and arrow every day and looked for a mountain throughout. However, a cow ogre is not found. So that an expert of even a bow is troubled, too, and, to God of a temple, a monster emerges; of 21 days prayed, and prayed earnestly. On a day of completion of a vow of the 21st day, He found the thing which glittered in a foot of the cliff before long.

It was a cow ogre of eyes such as a big plate. Takakiyo established an aim of an arrow quickly and shot it. he arrow hit it, but the cow ogre was going to jump at anger, Takakiyo.

Therefore He shot it in a second move, three arrows and consecutivenesses. The three arrows stuck in a mouth of a cow ogre and screamed. While He was surprised at size of excessive scream, the cow ogre has disappeared. Takakiyo followed a trace of blood and found that cow ogre was dead in the depths of a mountain.


Takakiyo cut a horn of a cow ogre. He dedicated rice given for thanks from people to a temple with the horn. The horn is still left in the Negoro-temple(根香寺). In addition, after when, it came to be said that, strangely, a hanging scroll of a cow ogre had an effect of a talisman against evil.

There is really a grave of Takakiyo in Japanese Shioe-cho, Kagawa.
